Krastorio 2 is an overhaul that preserves vanilla Factorio's core shape while dramatically extending its mid and late game. Originally created by Krastor and Linver, maintained by raiguard. It introduces new mineral tiers, 40+ specialized production buildings, 120+ technologies, rebalanced combat mechanics, and a standalone galactic victory condition.
The five things that will trip you up
- Science packs are tech cards, and they have strict lab tiers. Each tier requires a dedicated laboratory building. Early cards are phased out of research costs as you climb, so older science lines get retired rather than expanded forever.
- Production and utility cards are made in the Research Server. They cannot be built in assembling machines. You must construct the server before you can craft the cards it accepts.
- Wood is a critical industrial input, not decorative scenery. Electronic circuits, coke, and air purification filters all consume wood continuously. Greenhouses are early and mandatory.
- Stone is a rich processing tree, not a dead end. Stone crushes into sand, sand smelts into glass or filters into quartz, and quartz smelts into high-purity silicon for electronics.
- The crusher voids surplus. Most items fed into the crusher are destroyed outright; only specific recipes yield components. It is the mod's intended tool for clearing loop bottlenecks and fluid overflow.

Research ladder
9 Technology TiersNine progressive steps from spaceship crash survivor to a self-sustaining matter civilization. Research ordering is strictly tiered โ each tier gates access to the next generation of materials and machines.
T0 Basic tech card
You begin in the wreckage of a spaceship rather than bare grass. Two damaged fabricators, a generator, and a spaceship research computer survive the crash, providing enough power and compute for the first hour. The basic tech card is deliberately crude: crafted from wood and copper cable alone. It functions exclusively in the spaceship computer and is completely retired once automation cards are unlocked.
T1 Automation tech card
The automation core replaces vanilla's early gear wheel and iron plate assembling patterns. It appears in nearly every early building recipe, so a dedicated automation core manufacturing line pays for itself immediately. Blank tech cards become the shared substrate for all subsequent science cards.
T2 Logistic tech card
Electronic circuits arrive with an overhaul: K2's version requires wood alongside copper and iron, making greenhouse arrays mandatory. Wood is also baked into coke, which replaces raw coal in steel smelting.
T3 Chemical & Military tech cards
Chemical science requires glass, which originates from sand crushed from stone โ making the crusher the gateway machine for this tier. Military science requires biter research data, obtained by destroying alien nests to harvest raw biomass.
T4 Production & Utility tech cards
Here K2 diverges sharply from vanilla Factorio. Neither card can be built in an assembling machine โ both require the high-throughput Research Server. Production cards demand uranium-238 and bulk productivity modules, incentivizing an early centrifuge processing array.
T5 Optimization tech card
The space science pack equivalent. Launch orbital rockets with satellites, retrieve space research data, and process it into optimization cards. The mechanics follow vanilla rocket launches with unified tech card naming.
T6 Matter tech card
Imersite becomes the focal point of progression. Matter research data convenes imersite crystals, rare metals, lithium, and plastic bars into a single high-tier assembly. These cards require the Quantum Computer and are consumed in the Singularity Lab.
T7 Advanced tech card
Imersium is the alloy synthesized from imersite powder and rare metals. It unlocks the highest industrial machine tier: advanced assembling machine, advanced furnace, and advanced chemical plant โ delivering massive speed and 4 module slots each.
T8 Singularity tech card
The pinnacle science tier. Requires charged matter stabilizers and AI cores, necessitating an operational matter grid and charging infrastructure. Unlocks intergalactic transmission and victory tech.
Ores & raw stock
New ResourcesThree new world resources spawn naturally on the map alongside the standard vanilla resources.
Imersite
Rare, late-game, and unusable in raw form. Raw imersite must be mined with a heavy Quarry Drill (standard electric drills cannot mine it). Crushing raw imersite yields imersite powder and byproduct sand. Combining powder with rare metals forms Imersium โ the structural alloy of the endgame.
Rare metals
Combines the industrial roles of titanium, platinum, and gold. Smelts directly into rare metal plates, which feed processing units, imersium alloys, AI cores, and matter research data. In K2, processing units consume rare metals rather than complex circuit chains.
Mineral water
A surface liquid resource extracted via standard pumpjacks. Essential for lithium chemistry: mineral water yields lithium chloride, which electrolyzes into metallic lithium and chlorine gas for advanced energy storage.
Stone, sand, quartz
Crush stone into sand. Sand smelts directly into glass, or washes through water filtration into quartz crystals, which smelt into pure silicon.
Coal and coke
Coke is produced from coal and wood. It replaces raw coal in high-yield steel smelting (10 iron plates + 2 coke = 5 steel) and provides a cleaner, higher-energy fuel source.
Ore processing & smelting
High-Yield RefiningAdvanced chemical enrichment multiplies raw ore yield, while advanced assemblers can forge raw materials directly into finished components.
Enriched ores
Treating 9 raw ore with sulfuric acid and water in a chemical plant yields 6 enriched ore. 5 enriched ore smelt into 5 full plates โ representing a massive 20% gain in material efficiency. The byproduct dirty water is filtered back into clean water and recovered mineral byproducts in a closed loop.
Smelting-crafting
Advanced assembling machines can execute direct smelting-crafting: turning raw or enriched ores directly into gears, sticks, and beams in one step, bypassing intermediate plate bottlenecks.
Advanced machine tier
Unlocked by the Advanced Tech Card. Each advanced machine provides substantial speed increases and accommodates 4 module slots.
Fluids & gases
Atmospheric ChemistryK2 introduces 12 specialized fluids and 4 dedicated processing facilities for atmospheric condensation, water electrolysis, and byproduct filtration.
Filtration plant
Cleans dirty industrial wastewater back into pure water while recovering stone, iron, and copper traces. Also purifies heavy oil into solid coal and filters sand into quartz.
Electrolysis plant
Splits pure water into oxygen and hydrogen gases, separates saline sand into chlorine and hydrogen, and refines heavy water for nuclear fusion.
Atmospheric condenser
Extracts atmospheric gases using purely electricity. Never runs dry. Gathers oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, and atmospheric humidity.

Cultivates timber using water and electricity. Adding nitrogen fertilizer doubles yield per cycle, providing the high wood volume demanded by electronic circuits and steel coke.
Biomass & Bio Lab
Destroying alien biter nests drops raw biomass. The Bio Lab cultivates additional biomass using petroleum gas and oxygen. Biomass is synthesized into biter research data, medical kits, and organic catalysts.
Fuel hierarchy
A graded fuel ladder. Standard fuel is refined from light oil or solid fuel with hydrogen; biofuel and imersite-infused advanced fuel offer premium vehicle speed and acceleration bonuses.

Matter economy
Universal SynthesisThe signature late-game system. The Matter Plant dissolves solid materials into liquid matter fluid, while the Matter Associator condenses matter fluid into desired target items. An asymmetric exchange rate prevents infinite free resource duplication.
High-Value Matter Feeds: Uranium-238 delivers 47.1 matter per 10 units โ by far the most dense energy return in the game. An automated Kovarex enrichment loop provides boundless liquid matter feedstock.
